Payworks or Rippling: which should a growing Canadian company use?
Stay on Payworks if your people are all in Canada: it is Canadian payroll with HR, time and absence modules, and Payworks says it files T4s, RL-1s and ROEs for you, answers calls in under 60 seconds and keeps your data in Canada. Move to Rippling if you have about 10 or more staff across provinces or with anyone outside Canada and want payroll, HR and spend in one place; Rippling says it pays contractors in 185+ countries and offers an employer of record service, which we did not find on Payworks's pages. The CRA lists both as third-party payment providers for payroll source deductions, and for payroll only, under 50 staff in one province, Wagepoint is simpler than either. Read at both vendors and canada.ca, October 14, 2026.
At a Glance
Payworks is a Canadian payroll provider based in Winnipeg. It says it has served Canadian employers since 2001, and it sells payroll with HR, time, absence and benefits modules built around it. Rippling says it sells payroll, HR and spend tools in one place and pays people outside Canada too, and it lists IT tools on its Canadian site. The CRA lists both as third-party payment service providers for payroll source deductions, so this choice is not about whether your remittances reach the CRA. It is about how far your company reaches, how much of your HR you want inside the payroll system, and how you want to buy and be supported.
Rippling and Wagepoint may pay LedgerLogic a referral fee if you book a demo or sign up through our links on this page; Payworks pays us nothing. The verdicts below follow your situation, not the fee. We have not run payroll on Rippling or Payworks, so every fact comes from the vendors' own public pages, canada.ca and Service Canada, and each vendor's claims are labelled as theirs.

Payworks or Rippling: which one fits your company?
Start from where your people are and how many tools you want to run. This is our CPA routing; the sections below show the evidence behind each line.
| Your situation | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone is in Canada, you want payroll with phone support, and Payworks is working | Stay on Payworks | Remittances, ROEs and year-end slips done for you, Quebec handled in both languages, data kept in Canada (Payworks says) |
| Payroll only, all staff in one province, under 50 staff, choosing fresh | Wagepoint | Published prices from $20 a month plus $4 per employee, built only for small Canadian businesses |
| All staff in one province, under 50 staff, and you want HR in the same system | Employment Hero, with Rippling as the alternative | Both are compared on our Canadian payroll software page; if you are already on Payworks, price its HR module before you move |
| 10 or more staff across several provinces or with anyone outside Canada, or 50 or more who run payroll in-house | Rippling | Rippling says payroll, HR and spend sit in one place, and that it pays contractors in 185+ countries and offers an employer of record service |
| 50 or more staff who want payroll run for them | On Payworks: its Managed Payroll Services. Choosing fresh: ADP Workforce Now | Payworks sells two managed tiers, Assist and Complete; ADP Canada's midsized payroll page offers Workforce Now Comprehensive Services, which can take over some or all of your payroll, to businesses with more than 50 employees |
What does Payworks do well for Canadian payroll?
Payworks is built around Canadian payroll compliance and service. On its own pages, Payworks says:
- Compliance is done for you. Tax remittances and WCB premiums are handled for you, ROEs go directly to Service Canada, and Payworks files T4s, T4As and RL-1s with the CRA and Revenu Québec every year. Its small-business page says government remittances and year-end slip filing come at no extra charge.
- Quebec is handled natively. For Quebec employers, Payworks says it remits federal tax and EI to the CRA, and provincial tax, QPP, QPIP, the Health Services Fund and CNESST to Revenu Québec. It describes its service as fully bilingual and runs a French site.
- Provincial payroll taxes are calculated. Payworks says its payroll calculates employer health tax, Manitoba's health and post-secondary education levy, Quebec's Health Services Fund and Newfoundland and Labrador's health and post-secondary education tax, and submits those remittances for clients.
- Provincial rules sit in time tracking. Its Time Management module advertises automatic overtime calculations and pre-set provincial rules, with stat holiday pay, break rules and premiums calculated for you, and hours flowing straight into payroll.
- A person answers the phone. Payworks says calls are answered by a person in under 60 seconds, by a Canadian-based team trained through the National Payroll Institute. Its phone line runs 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Central time on weekdays, and chat runs 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Your data stays in Canada. Payworks says it runs two Canadian data centres and keeps back-up media with a Canadian document management firm.
- A suite around payroll. HR (onboarding workflows, e-signature, employee records, performance notes and an org chart), absence management, time and scheduling, applicant tracking, workforce analytics, HR advisory services, benefits through Payworks's partner plans or your current insurer, and Managed Payroll Services in two tiers, Assist and Complete. Payroll journals post to Xero or QuickBooks Online with location and class mapping to departments or cost centres.
On scale, Payworks said in 2025 that it serves more than 45,000 businesses and has more than 600 employees, with offices from Victoria to Dartmouth. In September 2025 it announced a strategic investment from Hg, a UK-headquartered software investor, and said its Canadian operations are unchanged.
Where Payworks stops is the border. None of the Payworks pages we read offers payroll for employees outside Canada, payments to contractors abroad or an employer of record service. For US staff, Payworks points to a partnership: in July 2025 Paychex, a US payroll company, named Payworks its preferred Canadian payroll provider. A company with people in both countries would typically run Paychex or another US provider for its American staff and Payworks for Canada, in two systems.
Payroll across provinces or countries?
Rippling says it puts Canadian payroll, HR and spend in one place and pays contractors in 185+ countries. Pricing is a custom quote. If everyone is in Canada and Payworks is working, staying is a fine answer.
Where is Rippling different from Payworks?
Rippling's pitch is one employee record that payroll, HR, IT and spend all read from, so a hire, a raise or a departure is entered once. For a Canadian company, these are the parts that matter:
- Canadian payroll. Rippling says its payroll runs in every province, Quebec included, handles CPP and QPP, EI, employer health tax and workers' compensation, and supports remittances to the CRA and Revenu Québec. Its Canadian payroll page lists TD1 collection and T4, T4A, RL-1 and ROE filings. Rippling's July 2025 release notes add ROE preview and approval with submission tracking, separate management of several employer health tax accounts, T4, T4A and RL-1 previews at any point in the year, and a choice of English or French pay stubs for every Canadian employee. Rippling says you can run payroll as often as you need at no extra charge.
- People outside Canada. Rippling says it pays contractors in 185+ countries and 50+ currencies, offers an employer of record service in countries where you have no entity, and runs its own payroll engines in its highest-volume countries. This is the clearest gap with Payworks. One caution: Rippling's Canada launch post says you can run your own entity abroad on Rippling or hire through its employer of record, so ask which route fits your US staff, and what it costs, before you plan around it.
- More HR on the same record. Rippling's legal terms give these as examples of its products available in Canada: Core Platform, Global Payroll - Canada, Time and Attendance, Scheduling, Benefits Administration, Recruiting, Headcount Planning, Performance Management, Learning Management and Surveys.
- IT and spend. Rippling says it sells a Visa corporate card in Canada, issued by Peoples Trust Company (its Canadian card launch excluded Quebec), and that its expense management is also live in Canada. Its Canadian site also lists IT products for identity, access and devices; confirm which are available to a Canadian company before you count on them.
- Accounting. Rippling says its payroll connects to Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite, among 650+ integrations.
What Rippling has not shown publicly for Canada. Its Canadian benefits page names no Canadian insurance carrier, although Rippling says it integrates with Wealthsimple for Group RRSPs. Its Canadian time and attendance page names no province's overtime or break rules. Rippling says it has supported Canadian companies since 2022; Payworks says it has served them since 2001. Put the carrier, overtime and data-hosting questions to Rippling in writing before you sign.
Rippling vs Payworks side by side: filings, remittances, Quebec and reach
Each cell says where its fact comes from. "Payworks says" and "Rippling says" mark the vendor's own claim; the first row is the CRA's list.
| What you need | Rippling | Payworks |
|---|---|---|
| CRA list of third-party payment providers, payroll source deductions | Listed (canada.ca) | Listed (canada.ca) |
| CRA remittances | Rippling says it supports CRA remittances | Payworks says remittances are submitted for you at no extra charge |
| Quebec and Revenu Québec | Rippling says every province including Quebec, with Revenu Québec remittances and RL-1 filings | Payworks says provincial tax, QPP, QPIP, the Health Services Fund and CNESST go to Revenu Québec, and it files RL-1s |
| T4 and T4A | Rippling says it handles T4 and T4A filings, with previews during the year | Payworks says it files T4s and T4As for you |
| Records of Employment | Rippling says admins preview, change and approve each ROE before it is sent, and track its status | Payworks says ROEs are submitted directly to Service Canada for you |
| TD1 forms | Rippling says it collects them | TD1 amounts loaded at setup (Payworks switching guide) |
| Workers' compensation | Rippling says it manages it | Payworks says WCB premiums are done for you |
| Employer health tax and other provincial payroll taxes | Rippling says it manages employer health tax and several EHT accounts separately | Payworks says it calculates EHT, the Manitoba levy, Quebec's Health Services Fund and Newfoundland and Labrador's tax, and remits them |
| Provincial overtime and break rules | Not named on Rippling's Canadian time page; ask | Payworks says automatic overtime and pre-set provincial rules |
| French | Rippling says English or French pay stubs | Payworks says fully bilingual service; French site |
| Paying people outside Canada | Rippling says contractors in 185+ countries and 50+ currencies, plus an employer of record service | Canadian payroll; for US staff, a 2025 partnership with Paychex |
| HR, IT and spend | HR products, expense management and a corporate card (its Canadian card launch excluded Quebec) in one place, Rippling says; IT listed, confirm for Canada | HR, absence, time, applicant tracking, analytics, benefits and managed payroll; no IT or card products in its product list |
| Pricing | Custom quote; per employee per month, some products add a monthly base fee | Instant online quote by headcount, pay frequency and province |
| Where your data is held | Ask Rippling | Payworks says two Canadian data centres |
| Accounting sync | Rippling says Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite | Xero and QuickBooks Online journals |
| Serving Canadian employers since | 2022 (Rippling says) | 2001 (Payworks says) |
Two notes from a CPA. First, the CRA list means both companies are set up as Electronic Data Interchange remitters that can send your source-deduction payment and remittance details to the CRA; the CRA says it does not endorse the companies it lists, and a provider's absence from the list tells you nothing. Second, the CRA's own page says you remain responsible for making sure it receives your payment by the due date, even when a provider sends it, so check the first remittances after any switch in your CRA business account.
How does Payworks pricing compare with Rippling?
Payworks prices online. Its instant quote takes your number of employees, your pay frequency (weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly or monthly) and your province, then lets you add modules such as HR, time, absence, applicant tracking and HR advisory. Benefits, Managed Payroll Services and Workforce Analytics are quoted by its sales team. Payworks says its pricing is transparent with no upgrade costs or licence fees, and that government remittances and year-end slip filing come at no extra charge.
Rippling quotes after you tell it what you need. Rippling says most of its products are billed per employee per month, some carry a monthly base fee, and each HR, finance or IT product is bought on top of its required core platform. It says there is no minimum headcount, and that payroll runs as often as you need at no extra charge. What Rippling publishes on price, and any current promotion, is on our Rippling pricing and offers in Canada page.
How to compare the two quotes. Put both on a 12-month basis for your real headcount and pay frequency, then add what each leaves out: implementation or setup, year-end slips, ROEs, off-cycle runs, and the HR and time modules you will actually use. Payworks asks for your pay frequency to price, so a weekly payroll and a monthly payroll will not quote the same; Rippling prices per employee per month. In our CPA view, a Payworks client that only needs Canadian payroll rarely saves money by moving. The case for Rippling is the tools it lets you retire: a separate HR system, a time-tracking app, a contractor-payments tool for people abroad or a company card program.
Wagepoint, Payworks or Rippling: which size fits which?
The three answer different questions. Wagepoint is payroll for a small Canadian team, Payworks is Canadian payroll with a suite and a service team around it, and Rippling is a platform for companies whose people are spread across provinces and countries.
| Wagepoint | Payworks | Rippling | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built for | Small businesses in Canada only (Wagepoint says) | Canadian employers, from one employee to thousands (Payworks says) | Companies in Canada and abroad; no minimum headcount (Rippling says) |
| Price | $20 a month plus $4 per employee or contractor (one pay run a month), or $40 plus $6 (unlimited runs) | Instant online quote | Custom quote, per employee per month |
| Quebec | Revenu Québec and CRA remittances, RL-1 and CNESST (Wagepoint says) | Revenu Québec remittances and RL-1s, bilingual service (Payworks says) | Every province including Quebec (Rippling says) |
| People outside Canada | Not offered on the pages we read | Canadian payroll; US staff through a partner such as Paychex | Contractors in 185+ countries and an employer of record service (Rippling says) |
| Beyond payroll | Syncs with Xero, QuickBooks Online, FreshBooks, Karbon, 7shifts and Deputy | HR, time, absence, benefits, applicant tracking, managed payroll | HR, time, benefits, recruiting, performance, card and expenses; IT listed, confirm for Canada |
| Best fit, our view | Under 50 staff, payroll only, one province | Canada-only teams of any size that want service and modules | About 10 or more staff across provinces or with people abroad |

Payworks or Wagepoint? For a small Canadian team that only needs payroll, Wagepoint is the simpler choice with published prices, and it is the payroll we use with clients whose books are in Xero; our Wagepoint review covers it in detail. Payworks fits when you want modules around payroll, someone to run payroll for you, a phone line answered by a person, or data held in Canada, and Payworks says it serves employers from one employee to thousands. Wagepoint says it serves only small businesses in Canada, so a company that outgrows it needs a provider built for more staff, such as Payworks, Employment Hero or Rippling; our guide to outgrowing small-business payroll in Canada covers when that point arrives. For teams in several provinces, our multi-province payroll guide covers what changes when you hire in a second province.
Can you switch from Payworks mid-year?
Yes. A January 1 start is the cleanest, because there are no year-to-date figures to carry and your old provider files that year's slips. A mid-year switch works if the year-to-date figures move with you. Payworks's own switching guide says the same when companies move to it, and says most businesses switching to Payworks run payroll within a few weeks; Rippling says most small businesses take 1 to 3 weeks to set up, with an implementation manager, so ask each vendor for a timeline at your size, in writing. Whichever direction you move, this is the checklist we use:
- Pick the cut-over date. January 1, the start of a quarter, or the first pay period after the new system has passed a parallel run. Avoid cutting over in the pay period just before a remittance is due.
- Load year-to-date figures for every employee. Earnings, CPP or QPP, EI, QPIP, income tax and taxable benefits. Without them, the new system restarts contributions from zero and can deduct past the annual maximums. If an employee ends up with more than one T4 for the year, the CRA's guide says to report the insurable earnings for each period of employment in box 24 of each slip.
- Carry the ROE history. On an electronic ROE, Service Canada asks for insurable earnings by pay period going back up to 53 weekly or 27 biweekly pay periods, and says an electronic ROE must give the equivalent of 53 weeks of payroll data. If someone leaves in the first year after the switch, the new system needs the old pay periods, so have the new provider load them or keep the old registers to complete those ROEs.
- Agree who remits the overlap. Put in writing which provider remits for the last pay period on the old system and the first on the new one, to the CRA and, in Quebec, to Revenu Québec. Then check both remittances in your CRA business account.
- Decide who files year-end. T4 returns are due by the last day of February, or the next business day when that falls on a weekend or public holiday. By our count, February 28, 2027 is a Sunday, so 2026 T4s are due on Monday, March 1, 2027. If you switch in the fall, agree in writing which provider files the 2026 T4s and RL-1s.
- Export before you cancel. Pay registers, year-to-date reports, T4 and RL-1 data, ROE history, GL mapping and employee records. Payworks's own guide gives the same advice to anyone leaving a provider.
- Rebuild the accounting sync. Both connect to Xero and QuickBooks. Re-map the payroll journal to your general ledger accounts and test one journal before the first live run.
Who should stay on Payworks and who should switch to Rippling?
Stay on Payworks if your people are all in Canada, payroll plus Payworks's own HR, time or absence modules covers what you need, you value a phone line answered by a person, you want your data held in Canada, or you want Payworks to run payroll for you through Managed Payroll Services. A switch costs time and carries year-end risk, so it has to buy you something.
Look at Rippling if you have about 10 or more staff and any of these is true: people in several provinces; contractors or employees outside Canada; HR spread across a separate HR system, a time app, spreadsheets and a contractor-payments tool; or you want company cards, and possibly laptops and app access, run from the same system as payroll and HR (confirm which IT products Rippling offers in Canada). That headcount is our CPA view of the fit, not a Rippling rule; Rippling says it has no minimum headcount.
Look at neither if you are choosing fresh, need only payroll and have under 50 staff, all in one province. Wagepoint is simpler and publishes its prices.

How we reviewed Rippling and Payworks
Sebastien Prost, CPA, read every fact on this page at its public source on October 14, 2026: Rippling's Canadian payroll, pricing, small-business, global payroll, benefits, time and attendance, corporate card and IT pages, its Canada launch post, its July 2025 release notes, its Wealthsimple announcement and its published legal terms; Payworks's home, payroll, HR, time, absence, benefits, managed payroll, small-business, corporate, security, contact, quote and accounting integration pages, its Quebec, payroll tax and switching guides, and its 2025 announcements; Wagepoint's home, pricing and Quebec pages; ADP Canada's site; and the CRA and Service Canada pages listed below.
We have not run a client payroll on Rippling or Payworks, and nothing here comes from either company's sales or partner material or from Rippling's help centre. We do run Wagepoint with clients. Rippling and Wagepoint may pay LedgerLogic referral fees through the links on this page; Employment Hero, named in the routing table, also has a referral relationship with us. Payworks pays us nothing, and neither Payworks nor ADP has a referral link on this page. None of that changes who we tell to stay and who we tell to switch.
