Why it is different

Clinic books are not regular business books

A generalist bookkeeper who has not worked with Canadian clinics usually gets at least one of these wrong. Each one quietly misstates your revenue or your tax position until year-end.

GST/HST exempt vs taxable

Most regulated health services are exempt; cosmetic, wellness, and retail are taxable. The split is profession- and province-specific, and it is the error we fix most often.

Insurance & direct billing

Reconciling TELUS eClaims, Pacific Blue Cross, ICBC, and WCB payouts against your practice-management software so revenue ties out to the penny.

Practitioner vs clinic income

Associate percentage splits, contractor-versus-employee classification, and keeping each practitioner's earnings clean and CRA-defensible.

Software that does not connect

Jane and most practice-management tools have no native accounting integration. We build the export-and-reconcile workflow so your books stay accurate without manual re-entry.

The question every clinic gets wrong

Does your clinic charge GST/HST?

Most regulated health services are GST/HST-exempt: physiotherapy, chiropractic, psychology, and, since June 2024, counselling therapy and psychotherapy. But cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, wellness services, and product sales are taxable, and a clinic that offers both is a mixed supply. Charge tax on the wrong service and you owe the CRA; miss input tax credits and you overpay. It is profession- and province-specific, and it is exactly where a CPA who works with clinics earns their fee.

Rule of thumb
Exempt: physio, chiro, psychology, psychotherapy, counselling therapy
Taxable: cosmetic/aesthetic procedures, wellness services, retail products
Mixed clinics need both handled and apportioned correctly

Always confirm your profession and province with a CPA before your first filing.
