Rippling or BambooHR: which should a Canadian company pick?
BambooHR is HR software without Canadian payroll: BambooHR says its payroll is designed to pay US-based employees, so Canadian companies connect a separate payroll provider such as WorkLinks or Payroll Guardian from its marketplace. Rippling sells HR and Canadian payroll as one system (Rippling says every province, Quebec included), and the CRA lists it as a third-party payment service provider for payroll source deductions. Pick Rippling for one system across provinces at about 10 to 500 staff, or keep BambooHR plus a payroll provider if your HR already runs on it and your payroll works. Read at both vendors' public pages, October 14, 2026.
At a Glance
If BambooHR and Rippling are both on your shortlist, the fact that decides the comparison for a Canadian company is easy to miss in a demo: BambooHR's own payroll pays US employees only, so a Canadian company on BambooHR runs payroll in a second system. Rippling sells HR and Canadian payroll as one system. This page compares that two-system setup with Rippling's single system, from the seat of the person who reconciles payroll at month-end.
CPA-reviewed from public pages: we have not used either product. Every BambooHR fact below was read on bamboohr.com, its Canadian page and its integration marketplace, and every Rippling fact on rippling.com/en-CA, Rippling's blog and legal terms and canada.ca, on October 14, 2026. LedgerLogic may earn a referral fee if you contact Rippling through our links, at no cost to you; BambooHR pays us nothing. Details in How we reviewed.
Rippling or BambooHR: which should a Canadian company pick?
Rippling if you want HR and Canadian payroll on one employee record. Rippling says its payroll runs in every province, Quebec included, with remittances to the CRA and Revenu Québec, and that new hires, salary changes and benefits deductions flow from HR into payroll automatically. The CRA lists Rippling as a third-party payment service provider for payroll source deductions. In our CPA view it fits best at about 10 to 500 staff, especially across provinces or with people outside Canada; Rippling itself says it has no minimum headcount.
BambooHR plus a Canadian payroll provider if your HR team already runs on BambooHR, your payroll works, and you value BambooHR's HR tools more than a single login. BambooHR says its payroll is designed to pay US-based employees, so in Canada you connect a separate payroll system: BambooHR's marketplace lists two Canadian payroll companies, WorkLinks and Payroll Guardian, plus global payroll providers and integration tools that connect others. That means two contracts, two systems and a sync someone has to own.
Does BambooHR do Canadian payroll?
No. BambooHR Payroll handles US federal, state and local tax filing and, in BambooHR's words, is designed to pay US-based employees. Its marketplace listing for Payroll is marked United States only, and its pricing page flags both the Payroll and Benefits Administration add-ons as US employees only. Its Canadian homepage, bamboohr.com/ca, groups its products as hiring and onboarding, HR data and reporting, time and attendance, employee experience, performance management and compensation; payroll is not among them.
For employees outside the US, BambooHR points to three routes: local payroll integrations (live for Xero Payroll in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, not Canada), payroll partners in its marketplace, and BambooHR Employer of Record, which is powered by Remote. BambooHR is also advertising $0 BambooHR Payroll subscription fees through December 31, 2026 for eligible customers who commit to a 12-month agreement. That offer is for its US payroll, and BambooHR's page sets the banner to show to US visitors only, so it does nothing for a Canadian payroll.
None of this is a knock on BambooHR as an HR system. It means the real comparison for a Canadian employer is Rippling against BambooHR plus whichever payroll provider you pair with it.
How do Canadian companies run payroll alongside BambooHR?
There are four routes, and only the first two are practical past a handful of employees.
| Route | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| A Canadian payroll provider listed in BambooHR's marketplace | The marketplace lists WorkLinks (online Canadian payroll with bi-directional integrations with BambooHR) and Payroll Guardian (Canadian payroll software; its listing says the company has served clients since 2003). For WorkLinks, the listing says HR fields are pulled into payroll and payslips and T4s are pushed back into BambooHR for employees. | Canadian BambooHR customers who want a packaged connector |
| Your current payroll provider, through an integration tool | Flexspring, Payroll Harmony and Connex Digital are listed in the marketplace as connectors between BambooHR and other payroll systems. You pay for the connector on top of both systems. | Companies keeping a payroll provider that has no BambooHR listing. Confirm the connector supports your provider and its Canadian fields before you sign. |
| Export and re-key | Someone copies hires, pay changes and terminations from BambooHR into payroll before each run. | Very small teams only. It is the route most likely to put a wrong pay rate or a missed termination into a pay run. |
| BambooHR Employer of Record | Remote legally employs the worker. BambooHR's marketplace listing says it covers employees in over 90 countries. | Hiring someone in a country where you have no entity. It is not a way to pay your own Canadian company's employees. |
On the Canadian side, WorkLinks says it supports payroll in every province and territory, including Quebec-specific rules, source deductions, T4s and RL-1s, and electronic ROEs, and it calls itself the official Canadian payroll partner for BambooHR. One detail to settle before you sign: BambooHR's marketplace listing describes WorkLinks pulling HR data in when you click a Sync button, while WorkLinks' own page says BambooHR updates sync to WorkLinks automatically. Ask which applies to your setup, because it decides who has to remember the sync before each pay run.
Rippling vs BambooHR side by side for a Canadian employer
| Feature | Rippling | BambooHR |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | HR, payroll and other workforce products on one platform; Rippling says each product is bought on top of its required core platform | HR software; its payroll and benefits administration add-ons are for US employees only |
| Canadian payroll | Built in. Rippling says it covers every province, Quebec included, with CRA and Revenu Québec remittances | Not built in. Connect a Canadian payroll provider (WorkLinks, Payroll Guardian, or another through a connector) |
| CRA third-party list | Listed as a third-party payment service provider for payroll source deductions (canada.ca, page dated July 21, 2026) | Not applicable: BambooHR does not run Canadian payroll |
| TD1, T4, RL-1 and ROE | Rippling says it collects TD1 forms and handles T4, T4A, RL-1 and ROE filings, with ROE preview and approval | Done by your payroll provider (WorkLinks says T4s, RL-1s and electronic ROEs) |
| Employer health tax | Rippling says it manages EHT and can keep several EHT accounts separately | Calculated by your payroll provider |
| Hiring | Recruiting, a separate product on Rippling's list of products available in Canada | Applicant tracking on every plan: 5, 25 or 50 open jobs on Core, Pro or Elite |
| Time tracking | Time and Attendance and Scheduling, both on Rippling's list of products available in Canada | Time and Attendance add-on; its page names overtime calculations for all 50 US states |
| Performance | Performance Management, on Rippling's Canadian product list | Pro and Elite plans: review cycles, 360 feedback and 1:1s |
| Benefits | Benefits Administration is on Rippling's Canadian product list; the pages we read name no Canadian carrier. Rippling says it integrates with Wealthsimple for Group RRSPs | Add-on for US employees only; the marketplace lists Effortless Admin for Canadian benefit plans |
| Accounting sync | Rippling says its payroll connects to Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite | In Canada, from your payroll provider; BambooHR's own general ledger connectors carry BambooHR Payroll data |
| Integrations | Rippling says 650+ | BambooHR says 150+ |
| Where your data is hosted | Not stated on the pages we read; ask Rippling | BambooHR says the US, Canada or Ireland, depending on the customer |
| Pricing | Custom quote; Rippling says most products are per employee per month and some add a monthly base fee | Published in US dollars (see pricing below), plus your Canadian payroll provider's fees |
One system or two: what syncs and what does not?
With BambooHR plus a payroll provider, BambooHR is the record of who works for you and the payroll system is the record of what you paid them and what you remitted to the CRA and Revenu Québec. Every event that crosses between them is a hand-off someone owns. With Rippling, Rippling says the same events start in HR and flow into payroll on one record. Here is where the difference shows up.
| Event | BambooHR plus a payroll provider | Rippling | What a CPA checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| New hire | Hired in BambooHR; the connector carries HR fields to payroll. SIN, direct-deposit details and TD1 claim amounts must be complete in payroll before the first run | Rippling says new hires flow from HR into payroll automatically, and that it collects TD1 forms | Tax on the first pay matches the employee's TD1 claim amounts (see our TD1 guide) |
| Raise or promotion | Changed in BambooHR, picked up at the next sync | Rippling says salary changes flow into payroll automatically | The effective date, and retro pay if the change lands after the run |
| Termination | Entered in BambooHR; final pay, vacation payout and the ROE are done in payroll | Rippling says admins can preview, change and approve an ROE before it is sent | For weekly, biweekly and semi-monthly pay, Service Canada gives you up to 5 calendar days after the end of the pay period in which the interruption of earnings occurs to issue an electronic ROE. A termination waiting for the next sync can miss it |
| Vacation and time off | Balances are usually tracked in BambooHR in hours or days; vacation pay dollars are calculated in payroll | Rippling says leave, time tracking and payroll sit on one record | The vacation payout on termination agrees with the balance HR shows (our vacation pay guide covers the calculation) |
| Benefits | BambooHR's benefits add-on is for US employees, so Canadian plans are run elsewhere, and deductions and taxable benefits must reach payroll | Rippling says benefits deductions flow into payroll | Taxable benefits reach the T4, and the RL-1 for Quebec employees |
| Provincial payroll taxes | Your payroll provider calculates employer health tax and workers' compensation | Rippling says it manages employer health tax and workers' compensation | Each province's EHT account is set up once, under the right entity |
| Year-end slips | Issued by your payroll provider; WorkLinks' listing says T4s come back into BambooHR for employees | Rippling says employees can see pay stubs and T4s at any time, even after they leave | Address changes made in HR reached payroll before the slips go out |
| Payroll journal | Exported from your payroll provider to your accounting software | Rippling says its payroll connects to Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite | Wages, deductions and remittances post to the right accounts and departments |
If you run two systems, add one check to month-end: the number of active employees in BambooHR should match the number of people paid in the last regular pay run, give or take known leaves. Any gap is a hire or termination that did not cross over. It takes five minutes and catches the errors that otherwise surface on a T4 or an ROE.
HR and Canadian payroll on one record
Rippling says hires, pay changes and benefits deductions flow from HR straight into its Canadian payroll, and the CRA lists it as a third-party payment service provider for payroll source deductions. See how it handles your provinces and headcount; pricing is by quote.
How do the HR features compare?
BambooHR's strength is HR, and it publishes what each plan includes. Core covers employee records, custom reports, workflows and approvals, applicant tracking with 5 open jobs, offer-letter templates, time-off management, employee satisfaction surveys and one compliance training course; its plan comparison also lists onboarding checklists and e-signatures. Pro adds performance management (review cycles, 360 feedback and 1:1s), an employee community, recognition and rewards, 25 open jobs and 15 training courses. Elite adds compensation planning with Mercer salary benchmarks, levels and bands, custom dashboards, HR benchmarks, 50 open jobs and 300+ courses. Time and attendance is an add-on. If you would buy Elite for salary benchmarking, ask whether the benchmark data covers your Canadian roles and cities.
Rippling sells HR as separate products on its core platform. Its published legal terms list Core Platform, Global Payroll - Canada, Time and Attendance, Scheduling, Benefits Administration, Recruiting, Headcount Planning, Performance Management, Learning Management and Surveys among its products available in Canada. Rippling's pricing page gives no price list, so the feature list is only half the comparison until you have a quote.
Two gaps we could not close from either vendor's public pages, so put them on your demo list:
- Provincial overtime. BambooHR's time tracking page names overtime calculations for all 50 US states and no province. Rippling's Canadian time and attendance page says it applies overtime and break policies based on location, but it names no Canadian province either. Ask both to show your provinces' rules working in the demo.
- Canadian group benefits. Neither vendor names a Canadian insurance carrier connection on the pages we read. Rippling says it integrates with Wealthsimple for Group RRSPs and other workplace savings, and BambooHR's marketplace lists Effortless Admin for Canadian benefit plan administration.
Which costs less: Rippling or BambooHR plus a payroll provider?
BambooHR publishes its HR prices in US dollars. For companies with more than 25 employees, its pricing page lists monthly prices starting at US$10.25 per employee for Core, US$17.50 for Pro and US$25 for Elite, with volume discounts applied automatically. At 25 employees or fewer it charges a flat US$250, US$425 or US$650 a month. At those starting rates, 50 employees on Core come to US$512.50 a month and on Pro US$875, and 150 employees to US$1,537.50 and US$2,625, before any volume discount. Payroll is not in those numbers: in Canada you add your payroll provider's fees, plus the connector's if you use one.
Rippling does not publish prices on its Canadian pricing page. Rippling says it prices by custom quote: most products are billed per employee per month, some add a monthly base fee, and each product sits on top of its required core platform. So the only fair comparison is two quotes for the same headcount, provinces and modules: BambooHR plus your payroll provider on one side, Rippling for HR, payroll and time on the other. Ask both which currency the quote is in, what implementation costs and how long the contract runs. BambooHR's $0 payroll fee offer does not change the Canadian math, because it applies to BambooHR's US payroll. For more on Rippling's costs, see Rippling pricing and offers in Canada.
When is BambooHR plus a payroll partner the right call?
- BambooHR already runs your HR and the payroll sync works. Replacing a working HR system to remove one integration is rarely worth the migration, especially mid-year.
- You want BambooHR's HR depth at a published price. Applicant tracking on every plan, performance management on Pro and compensation planning on Elite, all priced on its website.
- You need HR data held in Canada. BambooHR says it hosts customer data in the United States, Canada or Ireland, depending on the customer's location, needs and applicable law. If residency matters to you, get Rippling's answer in writing before you compare.
- You pay US employees too. BambooHR Payroll can pay the US team while a Canadian provider pays the Canadian team; WorkLinks says its BambooHR integration is for US and Canadian businesses.
- Your Canadian payroll is simple. One province, mostly salaried staff and few changes a month, so the hand-offs above are rare.
If you do switch payroll providers, plan the change for January 1 where you can. A mid-year switch means loading each employee's year-to-date earnings, CPP or QPP, EI, QPIP and income tax into the new system, so annual maximums stop at the right point and the year-end slips agree with what was actually paid.
When is Rippling the right call?
- You have 10 or more staff across provinces or with people outside Canada, or 50 or more in one province. That is where one record for HR, payroll and filings saves the most hand-offs. Our multi-province payroll guide covers what changes from one province to the next.
- You are replacing both systems anyway. If you are outgrowing a small-business payroll and have no HR system yet, buying two systems and a connector is the harder path. See when to switch payroll in Canada.
- You have Quebec employees. Rippling says its payroll covers Quebec, with Revenu Québec remittances and RL-1 slips, and that every Canadian employee can choose an English or French pay stub.
- You would rather not own the sync. Rippling says hires, pay changes and benefits deductions flow from HR into payroll without a connector, and that admins approve ROEs inside Rippling before they are sent.
- Finance wants clean journals. Rippling says its payroll connects to Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite.
One caution. Rippling says it has supported Canadian companies since 2022, so its Canadian payroll is newer than many Canadian payroll providers. Ask for a Canadian reference customer with your headcount and provinces, and have your accountant check the first two pay runs and the first remittance against the payroll register.

How we reviewed Rippling and BambooHR
We read BambooHR's payroll, pricing, local payroll, employer of record, time tracking, benefits and Canadian pages and its integration marketplace; Rippling's Canadian payroll, pricing, small-business, benefits and time and attendance pages, its Canada launch post, its July 2025 release notes, its Wealthsimple announcement and its published legal terms; WorkLinks' BambooHR page; and the CRA's list of third-party payment service providers and Service Canada's ROE guide, all on October 14, 2026. We have not used either product or taken a demo. Claims Rippling makes about itself are labelled "Rippling says", and claims from the other vendors are attributed to them.
What we could not confirm: whether Rippling payroll can take employee data from BambooHR (Rippling says its IT product connects to BambooHR, but we found no payroll connector on its public pages), whether either product's time tracking applies provincial overtime rules automatically, which Canadian benefits carriers Rippling connects to, and where Rippling hosts Canadian customer data. The CRA says it does not endorse the companies on its list.
