Deel or Rippling: which fits a Canadian company with staff abroad?
Rippling if most of your people are employed in Canada (about 10 or more, in our view) and you want Canadian payroll, HR and your staff abroad on one employee record: Rippling says its payroll runs in every province, Quebec included, and the CRA lists Rippling as a third-party payment service provider for payroll source deductions. Deel if hiring or paying people outside Canada is the main job: it lists its employer of record at $599 per employee a month and contractors at $49, month to month, and says it owns its entities in the US, UK and India. Rippling prices by quote after a demo, so compare a written annual quote, not a list price.
At a Glance
Deel and Rippling both pay people outside Canada, both run payroll and both sell HR software, so on a feature list they look interchangeable. For a Canadian company they are not. The question that decides it is where the centre of your workforce sits: a Canadian team with a few people abroad, or hiring that happens mostly outside Canada. This comparison reads both from the Canadian side: who runs payroll for your Canadian staff, what an employee abroad costs, which company actually employs that person, and what stays with you either way.
We have a referral relationship with both Deel and Rippling: if you sign up or book a demo through a link on this page, either one may pay us a fee. The verdicts follow the reader's situation, not the fee. See how we reviewed.

Pick by where most of your people work
If most of your team is employed in Canada, you have or plan people abroad, and you want payroll and HR in one system, start with Rippling. If most of the work is hiring or paying people outside Canada, start with Deel.
Deel
Hiring abroad first- Most new hires are outside Canada, or an employer of record is the main job
- You mainly pay contractors in other countries
- Your Canadian payroll can stay where it is
- You want published prices and month-to-month terms
Deel lists $599 per EOR employee and $49 per contractor a month.
See DeelRippling
Canada first- About 10 or more staff in Canada (our view; Rippling says it has no minimum)
- You want Canadian payroll and HR on one employee record
- People abroad should sit on that same record
- You are fine with a quote after a demo instead of a price list
Rippling prices by quote, mostly per employee per month, on top of a core platform.

Which one fits which Canadian company?
Start from your headcount and where people work, not from the feature list. This is the same routing we use across our payroll pages.
| Your situation | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| About 10 or more staff in Canada, with people abroad or about to hire abroad, and you want payroll and HR in one system | Rippling | Rippling says its Canadian payroll, HR and employer of record share one employee record |
| Hiring or paying people outside Canada is the main job | Deel | Employer of record in more than 130 countries, per Deel, with published prices and month-to-month terms |
| Mostly contractors abroad | Deel | $49 per contractor a month listed, and a Contractor of Record when you want the classification risk off your books |
| Under 10 staff, first person abroad | Deel, plus your Canadian payroll | Keep a small-business payroll such as Wagepoint for Canada and add Deel for the person abroad |
| Nobody abroad | Depends on headcount and provinces | Compare Canadian options in our payroll software comparison: Wagepoint for payroll only and Employment Hero, with Rippling as the alternative, for HR with payroll, each for under 50 staff in one province or under 10 across provinces; Rippling for 10 or more staff across provinces, and from 50 staff unless you want payroll run for you; ADP Workforce Now from 50 staff who want managed payroll |
The 10-staff line is our CPA view of where one system for payroll, HR and people abroad starts to pay for itself. It is not a Rippling rule: Rippling says it has no minimum headcount.
What job was each one built for?
Deel is built around hiring and paying people in other countries. Its pricing page leads with contractors at $49 per contractor a month, a Contractor of Record at $325 a month that shifts the classification liability to Deel, and an employer of record at $599 per employee a month, which Deel says gives full legal employment in more than 130 countries. Payroll for entities you own, HR and IT are sold as separate products on the same platform. Our Deel review covers the platform in more depth.
Rippling says it is built around one employee record, and that its global payroll is built on the same employee record as its HR system, and that every customer uses its HRIS to unify its global team. Rippling's pricing page says each HR, finance and IT product can be bought separately, alongside a required core platform, and that you get a custom quote. Rippling says its employer of record and contractor payments run in the same system. Our CPA-reviewed Rippling Canada review covers the Canadian product on its own.
The practical difference: Deel starts from the person abroad and adds HR around them. Rippling starts from your Canadian payroll and HR and extends them abroad.
Can Deel or Rippling run payroll for your own Canadian employees?
Both say yes. Settle this first: most companies reading this employ most of their people in Canada, and in our view Canadian payroll is the hardest piece to move later.
Rippling publishes the most Canadian detail. Rippling's Canada launch post says its payroll runs across all Canadian provinces, Quebec included, manages CPP and QPP contributions, EI premiums, employer health tax and workers' compensation, and supports remittances to the CRA and Revenu Québec. Rippling says its Canadian payroll collects TD1 forms and handles T4, T4A, RL-1 and ROE filings, and its July 2025 release notes added ROE preview and approval before sending, separate management of several employer health tax accounts, and a choice of English or French pay stubs. Separately, the CRA lists Rippling as a third-party payment service provider for payroll source deductions; the CRA notes that it does not endorse the companies it lists.
Deel says it offers its Global Payroll in Canada to companies with their own entity, that it uses the CRA's formulas to calculate deductions, and that a payroll provider like Deel can send the payment and remittance details to the CRA on your behalf. Its pricing page lists Deel Payroll at $29 per employee a month, managed by Deel's experts or, in the US and Canada only, run by your own team, and a Deel HR and Deel Payroll bundle it describes as best for teams based in Canada from $35 per employee a month. Deel says its software automates payments, tax calculations and reporting, but the Deel pages we read do not say in so many words that it issues T4s, RL-1s and ROEs for your own Canadian entity, so ask Deel to show year-end slips, ROEs and any Quebec employees in the demo.
| Canadian payroll | Deel | Rippling |
|---|---|---|
| Payroll for your own Canadian entity | Yes, Deel says (Global Payroll) | Yes, Rippling says, in every province including Quebec |
| Published price | $29 per employee a month | Custom quote, mostly per employee per month, on a required core platform; the total depends on the products you add |
| Year-end slips and ROEs named on its pages | Not named on the pages we read; ask | T4, T4A, RL-1 and ROE, Rippling says |
| Quebec | Not stated for your own entity on the pages we read | Rippling says yes, with English or French pay stubs |
| Who runs each pay run | Deel's team, or yours in the US and Canada | Your admins, as often as needed at no extra charge, Rippling says |
If your Canadian payroll already runs well and you do not need HR in the same system, keep it and add Deel for the people abroad. Our Canadian payroll software comparison covers that decision.
What does an employee abroad cost through Deel or Rippling?
An employer of record (EOR) legally employs and pays your person in their country on your behalf, and bills you. You pay three things: the salary, the employer contributions that country requires, and the EOR's fee. The salary and the statutory contributions are the same whichever EOR you use; the fee, and any extra benefits each one offers on top of the statutory minimum, are where they differ.
Deel lists its employer of record at $599 per employee a month, month to month with no long-term contract. Deel says the fee covers onboarding and local compliance, payroll processing and tax filings, benefits administration, and HR and legal support. Deel's prices show a dollar sign with no currency label; the page's structured data prices Deel Payroll in US dollars, so budget in US dollars and confirm the currency on your order form.
Rippling shows no EOR price on its Canadian EOR and pricing pages: you get a quote after a demo. Its pricing page says most products are billed per employee per month, some with a monthly base fee, and each product is bought alongside the required core platform. For one employee abroad, ask for the platform fee and the EOR fee as one annual figure. Rippling says setting up your own entity abroad can take 6 to 12 months, and that if you later do, it can convert EOR employees to direct hires without re-onboarding them.
Here is what one UK hire looks like, using Deel's own UK guide for the statutory part. Deel says to budget about 18 to 20 per cent on top of base salary for employer National Insurance and pension, and puts the total employer cost of a £50,000 salary at about £58,000 to £60,000 a year before other benefits.
| One UK employee at £50,000 | Deel | Rippling |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | £50,000 | £50,000 |
| Employer National Insurance and pension (Deel's estimate) | About £8,000 to £10,000 | About £8,000 to £10,000 |
| EOR fee for 12 months | $7,188 at list (12 × $599) | Quote after a demo |
The statutory part is set by UK law, so it is the same whichever EOR employs the person. Compare the fee line, and ask each vendor in writing about deposits and currency conversion before you sign.
Deel or Rippling: start with where your people work
Who actually employs your people in the US, UK and India?
An EOR employs your person either through its own company in that country or through a local partner. An owned entity means one company is accountable for the contract, the payroll and any audit; a partner puts another company between you and your employee. Here is what each vendor says about three countries Canadian companies hire in.
| Country | Deel | Rippling |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Deel says it has a wholly owned US subsidiary | Rippling says its EOR becomes the legal employer of your US workers |
| United Kingdom | Deel says it owns its UK entity directly | Not stated in Rippling's UK hiring guide |
| India | Deel says it has a wholly owned entity in India | Not stated in Rippling's India hiring guide |
| Employer of record countries | More than 130, on Deel's pricing page | 80, in a Rippling post updated June 29, 2025 |
"Not stated" is not "no": Rippling may well use its own entities in the UK and India, and its public guides simply do not say. Ask both vendors to name the employing entity for each country in writing, and keep that with the contract. On payroll, Rippling says it runs its own payroll engines in its highest-volume countries, and Deel says that in the UK it is not an aggregator routing through third-party providers.
Both describe a path to your own entity later. Rippling says it converts EOR employees to direct hires without re-onboarding, and Deel's UK guide says it hands over to an owned entity with no compliance gaps.
Which is better for paying contractors outside Canada?
Deel lists contractor management at $49 per contractor a month, with payments in more than 120 currencies, automated invoicing and tax form collection. If you do not want to carry the classification risk yourself, its Contractor of Record is $325 per contractor a month.
Rippling says approved contractor invoices sync to payroll and pay contractors in 185+ countries and 50+ currencies, and it sells a Contractor of Record that, Rippling says, takes on the compliance liability. Both are priced by quote.
For a handful of contractors and no plan to hire them as employees, Deel's published rate is easy to budget. If the contractors work alongside a Canadian team whose payroll and HR you run in Rippling, keeping them on the same record saves running a second system.
The Canadian tax side is the same on either platform. The CRA's 15 per cent withholding applies to fees paid to non-residents for services provided in Canada, and the CRA's guidance says payments for services performed outside Canada are not subject to it. A contractor who never works in Canada therefore needs no Canadian withholding and no T4A-NR slip. Our guide to hiring contractors and employees abroad covers the detail, including what changes when they come to Canada to work.
Do you want HR, IT and spend on one employee record, or an EOR-first platform?
This is the "HR and IT for a remote team" question, and it turns on where the team is employed.
Rippling says its global payroll is built on the same employee record as its HR system, and that its global HRIS is included in the platform. Its Canadian site lists IT products such as identity and access management and device management; confirm with Rippling which of them are available to a Canadian company. In Canada, Rippling says its spend product includes expense management and corporate cards, with the card launch excluding Quebec.
Deel sells the same layers as products around its hiring tools: HR plans from $5 per employee a month (worker profiles, org chart, time off, time and attendance), Deel IT from $49 per user a month (shipping, retrieving and securing laptops worldwide) and expenses from $8 per employee a month. Deel says it brings contracts, compliance, payroll and benefits into a single HR platform, and it bills month to month.
Our view: for a remote team employed mostly in Canada, Rippling's single record is the stronger fit, because Canadian payroll is the piece that is hardest to move later. For a team spread across several countries where you have no entity, Deel's hiring products do the main work and the HR layer can follow.
What stays with your Canadian company either way?
- No Canadian payroll for an EOR employee abroad. The EOR is the legal employer in that country, so the person is not on your Canadian payroll and you issue them no T4. You record the EOR's invoices as an expense, converted to Canadian dollars in your books.
- Your own tax presence abroad. An EOR moves the employment, not necessarily your business. If someone abroad sells for you or signs contracts, your company can still create a permanent establishment in that country. Our guide to where the real exposure sits sets out the test.
- Contractors who come to Canada. The 15 per cent withholding and the T4A-NR slip apply to the portion of the work done in Canada, whichever platform pays them.
- The paper trail. Keep the EOR or contractor agreement, the invoices and proof the work was done. If the CRA ever asks, the question is whether the cost is a real business expense, not which platform paid it.
Who should pick Deel, and who should pick Rippling?
- Pick Rippling if you employ about 10 or more people in Canada, possibly across provinces or in Quebec, and want Canadian payroll, HR and your people abroad on one employee record. Get a written quote that shows the core platform and each product per employee per month. Book a Rippling demo.
- Pick Deel if hiring outside Canada is the main job: an employer of record in more than 130 countries, contractors at $49 a month, a Contractor of Record when you want the classification risk off your books, and month-to-month terms. See Deel.
- Under 10 staff: keep a small-business Canadian payroll such as Wagepoint and add Deel the day your first person abroad starts.
- Nobody abroad: you need no employer of record, so the choice is Canadian payroll. Our payroll software comparison covers Canadian-only teams: Wagepoint for payroll only and Employment Hero, with Rippling as the alternative, for HR with payroll, each for under 50 staff in one province or under 10 across provinces; Rippling for 10 or more staff across provinces, and from 50 staff unless you want payroll run for you; and ADP Workforce Now from 50 staff who want managed payroll. For the HR choice under 50 staff, see Rippling vs Humi (Employment Hero).
How we reviewed, and our relationship with both
This comparison is CPA-reviewed from each company's own public pages, read on October 14, 2026: Deel's pricing page, its UK, US, India and Canada hiring pages and its Canadian payroll tax guide; Rippling's Canadian payroll, global payroll, employer of record, contractor of record, IT and pricing pages, its Canada launch post, July 2025 release notes and US, UK and India hiring guides; and the CRA's list of third-party payment providers and its guidance on payments to non-residents. Where a vendor states something about itself, we say so ("Deel says", "Rippling says"). Where a page is silent, we write "not stated" rather than guess. LedgerLogic has not run client payroll on either platform.
LedgerLogic may earn a referral fee if you contact Deel or Rippling through our links, at no cost to you. Deel has also paid us for articles written under its partner content program. Neither company paid for this page or chose its verdicts. Prices and country counts change, so we recheck this page against the vendors' own pages at least every quarter.
