At a Glance
Most businesses looking for a Sage 50 alternative in Canada are asking the same question at renewal time: is it worth paying for desktop software again, or is now the moment to move the books to the cloud? For most small businesses the answer is QuickBooks Online or Xero. Which one depends on what kept you on Sage 50 in the first place.
What does Sage 50 cost in Canada now?
Sage now sells Sage 50 two ways, desktop and cloud, and both are subscriptions:
| Plan | Sage 50 Desktop | Sage 50 Cloud | Users |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $82.67 a month or $916 a year | $142.25 a month or $1,576 a year | 1 |
| Premium | From $123.75 a month or $1,371 a year | From $199.58 a month or $2,211 a year | 2 or 4 |
| Quantum | From $572.42 a month or $6,341 a year | From $734.92 a month or $8,141 a year | 5 to 40 |
Read at sage.com/en-ca on 31 October 2026. Premium prices are for 2 users and Quantum prices for 5. Sage 50 Cloud carries a one-year minimum commitment, and payroll is an extra subscription.
Sage's other product, Sage Accounting, is a separate and lighter cloud ledger at $23, $50 or $72 a month. It is not Sage 50 in a browser, so moving to it is a migration just like moving to QuickBooks or Xero.

QuickBooks Online: the closest match to Sage 50
If inventory, job costing or payroll in the same login kept you on Sage 50, QuickBooks Online Plus is the nearest cloud equivalent: inventory tracking, project profitability, budgets and up to 40 classes and locations for up to five users, plus access for your accountant. QuickBooks Payroll sits in the same login. Through our link, new QuickBooks customers get 80% off for 8 months, so Plus is $22 a month for the first 8 months and $616 for the first year. Xero: the pick for service businesses and bigger teams
If Sage 50 was mostly your ledger, invoicing and GST/HST, and several people need the file, Xero is the cleaner fit: unlimited users on every plan, so the owner, staff, bookkeeper and accountant all work in one file for one price. Standard at $60 a month covers most service businesses; Premium at $80 adds multiple currencies. Payroll runs in a connected app such as Wagepoint. Through our link, a new Xero organization gets 80% off for 6 months, so Standard is $432 for the first year. Get 80% off Xero. Our Sage 50 to Xero migration guide covers the move step by step.
When staying on Sage 50 still makes sense
Sage 50 Premium and Quantum still include features the cloud ledgers cover only partly or through add-on apps: bills of materials, serialized inventory and departmental accounting. A manufacturer or distributor that relies on those, and a bookkeeper who runs it well, has no urgent reason to move. Price your renewal against the alternatives above before it auto-renews.
QuickBooks or Xero after Sage 50?
- Choose QuickBooks Online if you carry inventory, cost jobs or projects, want payroll in the same login, or have up to five people in the file.
- Choose Xero if you run a service business, need many people in the file, or your bookkeeper and accountant already work in Xero.
Both handle GST/HST, PST and QST, bank feeds and accountant access. The full head-to-head is in Xero vs QuickBooks for Canada, and the wider field, including Wave and FreshBooks, is in our Canadian accounting software comparison.

How to switch from Sage 50 without losing your history
- Pick the switch date: your fiscal year-end is cleanest, and check when your Sage 50 subscription renews so you do not pay for a year you will not use.
- Run the final Sage 50 reports at the switch date: trial balance, aged receivables and payables, inventory valuation and payroll year-to-date by employee. Keep a full backup and PDF copies of prior years.
- Set up the new file with your chart of accounts, GST/HST, PST or QST rates and bank feeds, then enter opening balances from the Sage trial balance.
- Re-create open items: unpaid invoices and bills, so receivables and payables tie to the Sage aged reports, and opening inventory quantities and costs.
- Move payroll at a calendar year start if you can. Mid-year, load each employee's year-to-date earnings and deductions so CPP, EI and tax maximums carry over.
- Reconcile the first month in the new system against the bank before you let the Sage subscription lapse.
Decide early how much history you need in the new system. Many businesses bring in opening balances and keep Sage 50 backups for prior years; if you need full history in the new ledger, plan for a conversion service.
