Airwallex Canada Review (2026): fees, FX, and who it actually fits

Airwallex is a multi-currency business account for Canadian companies that pay or get paid outside Canada: local account details in 20-plus currencies, FX at 0.5% above interbank on major currencies, free domestic CAD and USD transfers, and Visa cards with no foreign transaction fees, on a plan with no monthly fee. It is not a bank, and this review is clear about what that costs you.

Big-5 business FX spreads commonly land around 2 to 3% over the mid-market rate. Edit this to the margin on your own statement.

Airwallex publishes 0.5% above interbank on major currencies and 1% on the rest, with no monthly fee on the Explore plan. The calculation ignores SWIFT fees ($20 to $35 where local rails are not available) and any receiving fees, and assumes your volume is in a major currency. It is an estimate, not a quote.

The CPA verdict
BEST FOR CROSS-BORDER
Best for

Canadian corporations and sole proprietors with recurring foreign-currency flows: USD invoices to American clients, EUR or GBP suppliers, Amazon and Shopify payouts in several currencies, or contractors paid abroad. The more currencies you touch, the stronger the case.

Not for

Businesses that deposit cash or cheques, need a line of credit or term loan, want CDIC-insured deposits, or operate only in CAD.

Bottom line

On published pricing, Airwallex is one of the cheapest ways for a Canadian business to hold and pay in many currencies: no monthly fee, 0.5% FX on majors, free batch transfers to 120-plus countries. What it does not do is replace the operating account. Pair it with a Canadian bank for payroll, remittances and cash, connect both to the ledger, and the FX savings alone usually justify the setup time.

Quick answer

Is Airwallex worth it for a Canadian business?

Yes, if you pay or get paid in more than one currency. Airwallex gives a Canadian business local account details in 20-plus currencies, FX at 0.5% above interbank on major currencies (1% on the rest), free domestic CAD and USD transfers, and Visa cards with no foreign transaction fees, all on the Explore plan with no monthly fee. It is not a bank: no cash or cheque deposits, no lending, no CDIC coverage, and its registration as a payment service provider with the Bank of Canada is still pending. Most of our clients would run it beside a Canadian bank account, not instead of one.

What you get

What Airwallex gives a Canadian business

The pieces that matter when you invoice in USD, pay suppliers in EUR, or take Shopify payouts in three currencies. Figures are Airwallex's published Canadian terms as of September 2026.

Global Accounts in 20+ currencies

Local account details to collect payments from 70+ countries, including a CAD account with local bank and branch codes and a dedicated account number, so overseas clients pay you like a local.

FX at 0.5% above interbank

Airwallex publishes its margin: 0.5% on major currencies, 1% on the rest. It does not publish which currencies count as major; USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, HKD, SGD and CNY are the ones its Canadian pricing page names. Hold a currency and convert when the rate suits you.

Free domestic CAD and USD transfers

Batch transfers to 120+ countries on local rails are free. SWIFT, where it is needed, is $20 to $35 per transfer. Airwallex says more than 90% of payments arrive the same day.

Visa cards with 0% foreign fees

Unlimited multi-currency cards issued by Peoples Trust Company: virtual company cards, physical or virtual employee cards, per-card limits, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and up to 1% cash rebates on local CAD spend.

Bill Pay and expenses on the free plan

Explore includes bill pay, expense and reimbursement management, and up to 10 Spend users at no charge, which is where most Canadian SMBs will stay.

Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite feeds

Transactions flow into the ledger with the right currency, and the Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento connections cover online-store payments.

Batch payouts to 1,000 recipients

Pay overseas suppliers and contractors in one upload, in their currency, to 200+ countries in 60+ currencies.

FINTRAC and Revenu Quebec licensed

Airwallex (Canada) International Payments Ltd is a registered money services business with FINTRAC (M19395067) and a licensed MSB in Quebec (licence 14460). Registration as a payment service provider with the Bank of Canada is pending.

Pros & cons

Where Airwallex wins, and where a bank still does

Strengths
No monthly fee, no opening fee and no minimum balance on Explore, which covers everything a small business needs.
Local account details in 20-plus currencies, so a US client pays you by ACH and a UK client by Faster Payments, with no wire on their side.
Published FX margin of 0.5% above interbank on major currencies, against the 2 to 3% spread typical at Canadian banks.
Domestic CAD and USD transfers are free, and batch transfers to 120-plus countries on local rails carry no transfer fee.
Unlimited Visa cards, virtual for the company and physical or virtual for employees, with per-card limits, 0% foreign transaction fees and up to 1% cash rebates on local CAD spend.
Xero, QuickBooks Online and NetSuite integrations, plus Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento for online-store payments.
Licensed in Quebec (Revenu Quebec MSB licence 14460) as well as federally with FINTRAC, where Venn is not available to Quebec businesses.
Watch-fors
Not a bank: no cash or cheque deposits, no lending, no CDIC coverage. Registration as a payment service provider with the Bank of Canada is still pending.
The Grow plan's platform fee is not published as a number on the pricing page, so budget from Airwallex's own $99 CAD per month figure and confirm in-app.
Its help centre documents corporations and sole proprietorships only, so partnerships, non-profits and trusts should confirm eligibility before applying.
SWIFT transfers still cost $20 to $35, and in other regions Airwallex charges 0.3% on funds received from third parties, a fee its Canadian pricing page does not mention either way.

Airwallex vs Wise Business vs Venn

Three ways a Canadian business avoids bank FX. Wise is the cheapest pure conversion engine, Venn is the most complete Canadian operating account, and Airwallex is the one built for holding and paying in many currencies at once. Figures from each provider's Canadian pricing page, September 2026.

Wise: pure conversion / Venn: Canadian operating account

Our usual pairing for a Canadian company with foreign revenue is a Canadian operating account for payroll, CRA remittances and cash, plus Airwallex or Wise for the foreign-currency side. Venn covers both jobs for businesses outside Quebec that only need CAD, USD, GBP and EUR. See the full Canadian business banking comparison.

Note: Monthly prices are in CAD, as published at airwallex.com/ca/pricing on 2 September 2026. A Spend user is anyone who holds an employee card or submits, approves or pays an expense, reimbursement or bill. SWIFT transfers cost $20 to $35 where local rails are not available. Airwallex's Canadian pricing page lists no fee for receiving funds; in other regions it charges 0.3% on transfers from third parties, so check the in-app fee schedule before routing marketplace payouts through it. Our link carries no discount; Airwallex issues no promo codes.

How it works

From application to your first foreign-currency invoice

1
Gather three documents

Your 9-digit CRA Business Number (a sole proprietor uses a SIN), proof of formation such as Articles of Incorporation or a Master Business Licence, and government photo ID for directors and anyone owning 25% or more.

2
Apply online through our link

The application takes about 15 minutes. Airwallex says most Canadian accounts are approved in 1 to 3 business days, sometimes the same day. There is no promo code to enter anywhere.

3
Open the Global Accounts you need

Once approved, add local account details for USD, EUR, GBP and any other currency you invoice in. Each opens in minutes and carries no fee.

4
Put the new details on your invoices

A US client now pays your USD account by ACH, a UK client pays GBP by Faster Payments. Hold the balance until the rate suits you, then convert at 0.5%.

5
Connect the ledger

Link Xero or QuickBooks Online so each currency account feeds in with the right currency and your bookkeeper sees the FX gains and losses properly.

6
Issue cards and set limits

Create a virtual Visa per subscription or supplier, set per-card and per-period limits, and add the cards to Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Common mistakes to avoid
Closing your Canadian bank account. Airwallex is not a bank: keep the bank for cash, cheques, payroll, CRA remittances and CDIC-covered deposits.
Converting on autopilot. The 0.5% margin applies to major currencies; check the rate on other currencies, which run at 1%, and hold balances when you can.
Assuming receiving is always free. The Canadian pricing page is silent on inbound fees, and other regions charge 0.3% on third-party transfers, so read the in-app fee schedule first.
Booking FX gains and losses wrong in the ledger. Set each Global Account up as its own bank account in Xero or QuickBooks in the right currency.
Where it sits in the stack

Airwallex is the foreign-currency layer, not the whole bank

Keep a Canadian account for payroll, CRA remittances, cheques and cash, connect Airwallex to Xero or QuickBooks so every currency lands in the ledger correctly, and run corporate spend on whichever card platform fits your team. Our business banking comparison and multi-currency account guide show the combinations we set up for clients.

How we reviewed it

SP
Sebastien Prost, CPA
Founder, LedgerLogic

This review is built from Airwallex's own Canadian sources, all read on 2 September 2026: the Canadian pricing page, the business account and Global Accounts pages, the cards and transfers pages, the general terms, and the help-centre articles on eligibility and Canadian documents. Every fee, margin and regulatory statement above comes from one of those pages, and where Airwallex publishes nothing, such as a Quebec licence or a receiving fee, the review says so rather than guessing. We have not yet run a client's books through Airwallex. The judgement calls about fit come from setting up multi-currency banking for Canadian clients on Venn, Float and the big banks, and this page will be updated with first-hand findings when we do.

Common questions

10 questions people ask about Airwallex in Canada

The bottom line

The cheapest way to hold and pay in many currencies from Canada.

If foreign currency runs through your business every month, Airwallex on the free Explore plan will likely cost you less than your bank's FX spread alone, and the local account details make you easier to pay. Keep a Canadian bank account beside it for cash, cheques, lending and CDIC coverage. There is no promo code and no signup bonus; the price is the offer.
