Ramp or RBC PayEdge: which should a Canadian business use to pay suppliers?
RBC PayEdge is an accounts-payable and payments platform open to any Canadian business, RBC client or not: it pulls bills from QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage, routes approvals, and pays suppliers by EFT, Interac e-Transfer, wire, cheque, USD ACH or EUR from any Canadian bank account or a credit card (2.3% fee), on plans from $0 a month ($1 per EFT) to $219.95. It issues no cards and holds no money. Ramp is a spend platform: unlimited CAD and USD Visa cards with 1% cashback, expense management and bill pay on a free plan (Ramp Plus CA$15 per user), synced to QuickBooks Online, Xero or NetSuite, for corporations with CA$25,000 in linked accounts outside Quebec and Saskatchewan, with $500 USD after $1,000 of spend through our link. Pick PayEdge to keep paying from the bank and cards you have; pick Ramp for cards, controls and payables in one system. Verified at both vendors, September 2026.

Ramp or RBC PayEdge: the short answer
They solve the same problem, paying suppliers without keying every invoice, from opposite ends. RBC PayEdge is an accounts-payable and payments platform: it reads bills from QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage, lets you approve them, and pays suppliers by EFT, Interac e-Transfer, wire, cheque, USD ACH or EUR payment, funded from any Canadian bank account or from a credit card you already hold, for a 2.3% fee on card-funded payments. It does not issue cards or hold money, and you do not need to bank with RBC. Ramp is a spend platform: unlimited CAD and USD Visa corporate cards with 1% cashback, expense management, and bill pay with invoice capture and approvals, all free, synced to QuickBooks Online, Xero or NetSuite, with Ramp Plus at CA$15 per user for advanced controls. It needs a corporation with CA$25,000 in a linked account and is not available in Quebec or Saskatchewan.
Pick PayEdge if you want to keep paying from the bank and cards you already have and your main pain is invoice entry and approvals. Pick Ramp if you want the cards, the spend controls and the payables in one system and earn cashback on the spend. Many businesses we work with run Ramp for cards and bill pay and never need PayEdge; a few with heavy cheque or Interac payables keep PayEdge as the payment rail. Every fee below was read at each vendor's Canadian page in September 2026.

What RBC PayEdge does
PayEdge is RBC's accounts-payable platform and sits between your accounting software and your suppliers. It pulls unpaid bills from QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage Accounting, or takes a CSV, lets the right people approve them under rules you set, and then pays each supplier the way they want to be paid. That last part is its strength: EFT, Interac e-Transfer for business, wires in CAD and USD, cheques it prints and mails, USD ACH to American suppliers and EUR payments, all from one payment order that can pull from several funding sources at once. Suppliers can be paid by EFT even when you fund the batch from a credit card, which is the feature people pay the 2.3% for: it turns a supplier that only takes bank transfers into card spend that earns your card's points and extends your cash by a statement cycle.
The pricing is transparent. Pay as you go costs nothing a month, with $1 per EFT, $15 per wire and $25 per cheque. Premium at $89.95 includes 200 payments a month and drops cheques to $2.50; Edge Plus at $219.95 includes 500. You do not need an RBC account for any tier. What PayEdge does not do: issue cards, hold balances, manage employee expenses or receipts, or pay in currencies beyond CAD, USD and EUR.
What Ramp does in Canada
Ramp starts from the card. A Canadian corporation gets unlimited physical and virtual Visa cards in CAD and USD, issued by Peoples Trust, with per-card limits, automatic receipt matching, 1% cashback fixed on all spend and no personal guarantee; the limit is underwritten against the cash in your linked account, which is why Ramp asks for CA$25,000 and corporations only. On top of the cards sit expense management and bill pay: invoices are captured by OCR, routed for approval and paid by EFT, with GST/HST coding pushed into QuickBooks Online, Xero or NetSuite. All of that is on the free plan; Ramp Plus at CA$15 per user adds AI-assisted reviews, budgets, custom records and the NetSuite and Sage Intacct integrations. Our Ramp Canada review covers the eligibility rules and the differences from the US product, and the deal page has the $500 offer terms.
What Ramp does not do in Canada: hold your cash or pay yield (Ramp Treasury is US-only), issue cheques, send Interac e-Transfers, or serve Quebec and Saskatchewan businesses.
Who should pick which
- PayEdge fits a business that already banks and holds cards where it wants to, pays many suppliers by cheque or Interac, wants to fund supplier payments from an existing rewards card, or is in Quebec or Saskatchewan where Ramp is not offered.
- Ramp fits a corporation with a team spending on cards, USD subscriptions and vendors, and a controller who wants cards, expenses and payables coded into the ledger without a second tool. The 1% cashback on all spend and the $500 signup bonus tilt the economics further.
- Both together makes sense for a business that runs Ramp for cards and most payables and keeps PayEdge for the handful of suppliers who insist on cheques or Interac. Neither holds your cash, so the bank account stays where it is; our business bank account comparison covers that layer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an RBC account to use PayEdge?
No. RBC states that any Canadian business can use PayEdge whether or not it banks with RBC, funding payments from any Canadian bank account, credit union or Visa or Mastercard credit card. Virtual card payments to suppliers are the exception: they are available only to RBC commercial credit cardholders.
Does RBC PayEdge issue corporate cards?
No. PayEdge pays suppliers; it does not issue cards to your team or manage employee expenses. If you want cards with spend controls and cashback, that is Ramp's side of the comparison, or Float for a Canadian-built alternative.
What does RBC PayEdge cost?
Pay as you go is $0 a month with $1 per EFT, $15 per wire and $25 per cheque. Premium is $89.95 a month with 200 payments included and cheques at $2.50; Edge Plus is $219.95 with 500 payments. Funding a payment from a credit card costs 2.3%. Custom pricing exists for higher volumes.
Is Ramp free in Canada?
Yes. Ramp's Canadian plan is CA$0 per user and includes unlimited CAD and USD cards, expense management, bill pay and the QuickBooks Online and Xero integrations. Ramp Plus is CA$15 per user per month plus a platform fee, billed annually, for advanced controls and the NetSuite and Sage Intacct integrations.
Can PayEdge pay US or overseas suppliers?
Yes, within limits: USD by cross-border ACH or wire, and EUR by international payment, at the exchange rate PayEdge shows when you create the order. For suppliers in other currencies, or for holding foreign balances, a multi-currency account such as Airwallex or Venn is the tool, not PayEdge.
Which is better for Quebec businesses?
PayEdge, by default: Ramp does not support businesses based in Quebec or Saskatchewan. Quebec companies that also want corporate cards can look at Airwallex, which holds a Revenu Québec money services business licence, or Float.
Can I fund supplier payments with a credit card on Ramp?
Ramp's bill pay pays suppliers by EFT from your linked account; the card side is Ramp's own Visa cards, which earn 1% cashback on what you charge to them. PayEdge is the one that lets you fund an EFT or cheque to a supplier from a third-party credit card, for 2.3%.
Do Ramp and PayEdge work with Xero and QuickBooks Online?
Both do. PayEdge syncs bills and payment status with QuickBooks Online, Xero and Sage Accounting; Ramp syncs cards, expenses and bill payments with GST/HST coding to QuickBooks Online and Xero, and to NetSuite and Sage Intacct on Ramp Plus.
